Human Rights Watch Calls on U.S. to Sponsor resolution

Human Rights Watch:

"(New York, March 17, 2004)The United States should sponsor a resolution at the U.N. Commission on Human Rights criticizing China's systematic violation of human rights, Human Rights Watch said today."

NGO Human Rights Watch today called on the U.S. to sponsor a Resolution at the UN Human Rights Conference currently underway in Geneva critising China's Human Rights record.

Despite calls by the U.S. House of Representatives to do so and earlier State department "threats" that they were going to do it all has been quiet on this front the last weeek or so.

I have said all along that I do not believe the U.S. will do so this year. Recent telephone hook ups between Sec of State Powell and his Chinese counterpart combined with some "glasnost" type talk and actions on HR coming out of Beijing of late say to me a deal may have been done.

We will just have to wait and see.
