Doctor Calls On Government To Admit Guilt over Tiananmen

BBC NEWS | World | Asia-Pacific | China doctor calls 1989 'mistake':

Tiananmen"the June 4 incident is the most serious mistake committed by our party in history. "

So was quoted ex President Yang Shangkun (speaking about the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989) by a Chinese Doctor who came to prominence last year by revealing the true extent of the SARS virus in China.

Jiang Yanyong was a surgeon in Beijing Hospital on that fatal day and treated many victims of the atrocity and has sent a letter to the Beijing Government asking them to admit the error of the Government's response at the time.

It is perhaps a mark of the extent of change in China that such a prominent personage would not only come out and write such a letter but to also openly quote an ex Senior politician in saying something critical about the incident.

What is needed is for China to admit her mistakes over Tiananmen, apologise, compensate those hurt and imprisoned and attempt to move on otherwise there is no doubt that Tiananmen Square will hang as an albatross around the neck of China for a long time to come
